The report includes Abdi İbrahim’s sustainability goals set for 2030, 2040, and 2050, within the framework of healing the future of the ecosystem, people and business, along with the projects carried out in line with these goals. Planning its sustainability activities with a comprehensive perspective encompassing environmental, social, and governance aspects, Abdi İbrahim published its 6th Sustainability Report, detailing its sustainability efforts between January 1, 2021 and December 31, 2022. The report released by Abdi İbrahim, a signatory of the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC) since 2010 and committed to integrating ten of the 17 sustainable development goals defined by the UN into all its business processes, strategies, and operations, encompasses qualitative and quantitative data covering the Headquarters and Esenyurt Production Complex.
Prepared in accordance with the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) standards, the report transparently shares Scope 1, Scope 2, and Scope 3 greenhouse gas emission data for the years 2021 and 2022, verified with limited assurance by an independent third-party organization.
Healing the Future of the Ecosystem, People, and Business
Abdi İbrahim, aiming to combine international leadership and the transformation it sparked through its vision of “Healing the Future” into a meaningful transformation shaping and improving the future, focuses on three key areas in its sustainability journey: Healing the future of the ecosystem, people, and business.
Under the umbrella of Healing the Future of the Ecosystem, the company successfully completed Phase 1 of the Green Harmonization project, one of the standout projects of its low-carbon packaging strategy. Utilizing an artificial intelligence-based intuitive optimization algorithm for the first time in the global pharmaceutical sector, the company reduced greenhouse gas emissions from packaging materials by 28% per product. With this project, Abdi İbrahim achieved savings equivalent to 179 tonnes of packaging materials, energy equivalent to the annual electricity consumption of 150 households, and annual material savings of 1 million euros.
Additionally, Abdi İbrahim became the first Turkish pharmaceutical company to document, according to international standards, that the electricity used at its Headquarters and Esenyurt Production Complex has been generated from renewable energy sources since 2020.
Having reported to the CDP since 2020 and securing a position on the A List in the Climate Change Program in 2023, Abdi İbrahim became the first and only Turkish pharmaceutical company to have its commitments approved by the Science-Based Targets Initiative (SBTi) in 2022. Additionally, the company pledged to align with the SBTi Net Zero Standard by committing to the “2050 Net Zero Emission Target.”
Under the umbrella of Healing the Future of People, Abdi İbrahim focuses on both its employees and the community, providing fair working conditions for employees by promoting diversity, equality, and inclusion while adapting to the global transformation fueled by technology and artificial intelligence through training and development programs aimed at equipping employees with new skills. Furthermore, during this period, Abdi İbrahim continued to implement innovative practices in career management and leadership development for its employees, while also increasing the number of female employees both in its Leadership Team and overall.
Additionally, by supporting social innovation, volunteering activities, and societal investments, Abdi İbrahim contributes to the well-being of society.
The company established the Abdi İbrahim Foundation in 2021 to operate in the fields of sports, education, and health. In 2022, it inaugurated the Abdi İbrahim Foundation House of Kindness, where children undergoing cancer treatment and their families can stay free of charge. Within the scope of its societal investment programs, Abdi İbrahim has also implemented several value-added projects such as “Social Innovation in Health,” “Promoting Scientific Awareness Among Youth,” and “Company Volunteer Projects.”
Under the umbrella of Healing the Future of Business, Abdi İbrahim aims to elevate its leadership in Turkish biotech industry to a global level. In line with its vision of producing biotechnological products from cell level onwards in the country, Abdi İbrahim invests in creating a broad product portfolio, conducting research to develop its business model, and incorporating responsible procurement principles by involving the supply chain in this transformation.
During this period, Abdi İbrahim also focused on growth, R&D, and facility investments abroad, successfully increasing its net sales in foreign markets by 10% compared to 2020. The company allocated TRY 192 million to R&D expenses and made investments totaling USD 53 million. Abdi İbrahim’s facility investments included the Sterile Inhalation Facility, which provided Türkiye with the advanced nebule technology used in the treatment of respiratory diseases.
The company also continued to increase the share of local suppliers in its procurement operations in Türkiye, raising the proportion of local suppliers to all suppliers to 72% in 2022.
“Supporting our sustainability strategy with ambitious milestones for 2030, 2040, and 2050”
Dr. M. Oğuzcan Bülbül, President of Human Resources, Corporate Communication and Sustainability at Abdi İbrahim, provided insights into the content of the report: “For us, sustainability means utilizing the power of science and technology to prevent the emergence of crises caused by climate change, minimize our risks, and manage those already affecting our business processes in the most ideal manner. Our mission in this regard is to create greater value for our stakeholders by optimizing resource usage, thus opening the doors to a healthier, more livable, and better future. To keep pace with the ongoing changes and the green transformation, we aspire to be integral to the development of local and global solutions that address emerging trends, evolving stakeholder expectations, shifting lifestyles, and the national and global fight against the climate crisis, all the while aiming to create sustainable benefits by healing the lives we touch. Our sustainability strategy, designed with a long-term value creation perspective, is reinforced by the ambitious milestones we have set for 2030, 2040, and 2050.
An important feature that sets our 6th Sustainability Report apart from its predecessors is the innovative perspective demonstrated through the use of artificial intelligence in its preface and visuals. “Our report, titled ‘A Symphony of Visionaries and Artificial Intelligence for a Sustainable Future,’ was designed by merging human imagination with artificial intelligence. By blending the vast capabilities of artificial intelligence with the unique and limitless imagination of humans, we aim to highlight the adaptability and flexibility inherent in Abdi İbrahim’s DNA. Projects such as optimizing production, implementing packaging designs created using artificial intelligence technologies in line with the Green Harmonization strategy, and producing personalized vitamins with advanced 3D printers, among others, align seamlessly with Abdi İbrahim’s HEAL2050 sustainability strategy, alongside many other sustainability initiatives. As a company that has set many precedents in the pharmaceutical industry, we will continue to lead the change and transformation in sustainability with a restorative and proactive approach.”
“The connection between artificial intelligence designs and a sustainable world”
In addition to the preface of the report, which offers an innovative blend of art and technology, digital artworks featured on the cover and separator pages were also created with the support of artificial intelligence. Through this dynamic collaboration curated by artist Bager Akbay, the company aims to present its activities visually in an engaging and accessible manner, allowing stakeholders to interact more deeply with the content.
Artist and designer Bager Akbay, who designed the digital artworks based on the story included in the content using artificial intelligence, expressed his delight in contributing to a sustainability report: “We find ourselves in a period where we are approaching the physical limits of the world, knowing that there will be no alternative to this magnificent planet that sustains us for a while longer. Humanity must slowly emerge from adolescence and learn to become adults or be taught by the world. This was the motivation our team had when creating the artwork for Abdi İbrahim’s 6th Sustainability Report. The digital nature of both the subject and production of the report led us to create visuals that do not involve physical materials. Using artificial intelligence, nourished by aesthetics and culture created by humans over centuries, while avoiding material consumption, was meaningful and enjoyable for us. I believe there is a connection between using artificial intelligence designs and the goal of a sustainable world. Technology, when designed and used correctly, functions like a kind of resource compression algorithm. It enables us to utilize our efforts and resources in a more focused and efficient manner. By increasing efficiency and minimizing resource use in this project, we believe we have maximized the benefits of sustainability principles as much as possible.”
